Art, Nature, and Community Flourish at WaterWork 2025
This September 26-27, Austin’s historic Seaholm Intake Facility will once again serve as a vibrant canvas for creativity with the return of WaterWork, the captivating projection art show. Presented by The Trail Conservancy and Design Austin, this two-night event celebrates the remarkable intersection of technology, art, and nature, drawing together local artists for a spectacular showcase against the backdrop of a cherished historical landmark.
Transforming a Historic Landmark
Last year’s inaugural event was nothing short of a creative experiment, as co-curator Emily Eisenhart envisioned the idea during an architectural boat tour of Lady Bird Lake. She remarked, "I saw the Seaholm façade and thought, 'We can't paint on it, but what if we project art onto it?" Thanks to the support of The Trail Conservancy and Design Austin, her vision materialized into what has become a hallmark of the Austin arts scene.
A Diverse Range of Artistic Expressions
This year, fifteen Austin artists will present two- to three-minute video works, specifically tailored to enhance the Seaholm’s architectural features. From animated creations to stunning visual displays that capture the essence of limestone and stonework, the breadth of styles will thrill viewers. Ingenious projection mapping techniques will transform the facility into a dynamic gallery, complete with accompanying soundscapes. Artists have collaborated with local musicians, ensuring an immersive experience as attendees can stream the audio from their phones or listen from nearby boats.
Accessible Art for Everyone
With projections visible from various points along the Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, including historic landmarks like Auditorium Shores, WaterWork is designed for accessibility. Attendees can enjoy the show for free from designated viewing areas, but for those looking for a unique experience, ticketed boat cruises are available, adding an extra layer of immersion. Given last year's rapid sell-out, it’s advisable to book early if you're hoping to soak in the show from the water where the atmosphere is truly special.
